Believe it or not –
Christmas is coming! With Christmas comes music, and what better time to
celebrate life and the gift of singing?
A new choir is being formed
in Lake County purely for the joy of sharing music during the upcoming season.
Beginning Friday, September 28 singers of all ages and experience levels will
join together to learn a piece called ‘The
Splendor of Christmas,’ a Christmas Cantata that ranges in style from Elvis
to Handel. Directed by local singer and choir director Sheila Baker Bondurant,
the music is sure to be excellent and the experience great FUN for all
involved.
A Cantata is a collection of
theme related songs that feature choir singing as well as soloists and small
groups. Cantatas are generally religious in nature, but frequently include
popular songs and familiar themes. ‘The
Splendor of Christmas’ incorporates songs like Jingle Bells, I heard the
Bells on Christmas Day, Deck the Halls and Have Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas with Go Tell it on the Mountain, O Come All Ye Faithful and a medley
from G.F. Handel’s ever popular classic Messiah
and more.
Rehearsals begin with an
informational meeting and run-through on Friday, September 28th at
7pm and will be held on subsequent Fridays through November. As part of the fun
and community building, singers are encouraged to join in social time after
rehearsals. Performances of ‘The Splendor of Christmas’ will be an
open dress rehearsal on Friday, December 7th, time t.b.a., Saturday ,
December 8th @ 7pm and Sunday, December 9th @ 10:30am. Performances
and rehearsals will be hosted by First Christian Church of Gurnee at 6080 Gages
Lake Road.
